The BC-Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (BC-JERF) will be holding a one year anniversary concert “One Year Later: Shaken But Never Broken,” on Sunday, March 11th from 3pm to 5pm at Nikkei Centre. Proceeds from the concert will go to Chikyu no Stage and Ashinaga Ikueikai. Featured performers include JaVan, Sakura Singers; Yayoi & Chieko Konishi; Cattleya Chorus; Baggy Bootz; Kozue Matsumoto, Yuriko Nariya, Takeo Yamashiro & Minoru Yamamoto; Yuaikai Ryukyu Taiko and Chibi Taiko. Moreover, Japan Love photo exhibit “365days” will be open from 1:30pm, shiatsu (!) by donation will take place from 1pm to 5pm and Yuiaikai Ryukyu Taiko will be welcoming guests from 2:30pm

Former Japanese Olympic curlers to hit Vancouver streets
to raise funds for earthquake relief

Vancouver, BC – April 4, 2011 – Two-time Japanese Olympic curlers Ayumi Ogasawara (former Onodera) and Yumie Funayama (former Hayashi) will be joining forces with the BC Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (BC-JERF) to raise funds for a special lunch time fundraising campaign. They will be at the corner of Burrard and Robson on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 11:30am to 1:00pm, carrying BC-JERF donation boxes.

Ms. Ogasawara and Ms. Funayama represented Japan at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and also at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics as members of Team Aomori. After taking a four year hiatus from curling, they both got married, started their own families and are now back in curling.

In Vancouver to take part in several bonspiel events, and knowing the city well from their training preparations for the Salt Lake City Games, the two jumped at the opportunity to help with the BC-JERF street fundraising efforts.

“We heard how so many Japanese and Canadians are supporting Japan from Vancouver, which has been dear to us for a long time. We wanted to be a part of this support team that is working so hard. Some curlers couldn’t join the bonspiel this time so while they are staying behind and doing their best, we wanted to help the victims of the disaster as much as possible while we are here in Vancouver,” said Ogasawara and Funayama.

“They’ve been touched by the generosity of Canadians and they really wanted to find some way to give back, especially since the disaster took place close to the part of Japan they represented at the Olympics,” said Joji Kumagai, Chair of BC-JERF.

The BC Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (BC-JERF) is a coalition of volunteers comprised of individuals, community groups and businesses concerned for the well being of the people in Japan in the wake of the recent earthquake, tsunami, and unfolding nuclear threats. Our purpose is to vet and act as an organizational hub for BC communities’ fundraising efforts and to facilitate the delivery of this financial aid to the affected people in Japan. Funds raised through BC-JERF-endorsed campaigns and events will be donated in full to reputable charities operating on the ground in Japan, such as the Japanese Red Cross.

元オリンピックカーリング選手
地震被災者支援のためにバンクーバーで街頭募金

Vancouver, BC – April 4, 2011 – 元オリンピック選手、小笠原歩(旧姓小野寺)さん、と船山弓枝(旧姓林)さんがBC-日本地震支援基金(BC-JERF)の特別街頭募金キャンペーンに参加してくださることになりました。4月6日水曜日、午前11:30から午後1時まで、バラード通りとロブソン通りの交差点でBC-JERFの募金箱を持って活動します。

小笠原選手と船山選手は2002年のソルトレイクシティオリンピックと2006年のトリノオリンピックでチーム青森のメンバーとして活躍しました。トリノオリンピック終了後、結婚、子育てなどでの4年間の休止期間を経て、またカーリングに戻ってきました。両選手は、いくつな￥カーリングの試合のためにバンクーバーを訪れていましたが、BC-JERFの街頭募金活動にも参加していただけることになりました。

両選手は“私たちも長く交友があるこの地バンクーバーでたくさんの日本人の方が支援活動をし、たくさんのカナダ人の方が日本を思って支援活動をサポートしてくださっていると聞きました。　私どもも少しでも震災支援の力になりたく、応援してくださっている在カナダ日本人の方々と一緒に募金活動ができればと考えました。　今 回のカナダでのボンスピールのイベントには震災の関係で出場できなくなった選手もおり、日本にで頑張っている彼らと同様、私たちも少しでも震災被害者の方のお役に立てればと思っています” と述べています。

“両選手ともカナダ人の優しさにとても感動され、自分たちでも何かしたいと強く思ってくださっています。特に彼らがオリンピックで代表を務めた地域は今回の被災地にとても近い場所でしたから。”とBC-JERFの議長ジョージ･クマガイは述べました。
